Rachel is 25

Today Rachel is 25 years old. Quarter of a century. That’s sounding scary. :)

I just wanted to wish her a happy b-day. She is the best. RachBday1.jpgAnyone who knows us and is honest will tell me privately that I “married up.” In other words, she’s above me on all levels. And it’s true. She’s my greatest accomplishment and always will be. I have no idea how I tricked her into marrying me. I have to work hard to keep up with her. I usually fall well short of her on most things that matter. She’s so patient and kind. She keeps me on track when I mess up…which I often do.

For almost four years now i’ve recognized and appreciated how supportive and loving she is as a wife. She’s stood by me through thick and thin. She believes in me. She encourages me. She inspires me. She is the one who deserves all the credit for any “success” we seem to be blessed with. She leads. She influences. She has a good heart. A huge heart. She cares. She believes in miracles. I always wanted to marry someone who believes in miracles. Found her. She is beautiful, inside and out. She is the foundation of my life. She is the rock of our growing, young family.

Just recently with the addition of little Sam, i’ve come to see how amazing a mother she is. She loves Sam in the special way that great mothers do. She loves to take care of him. She doesn’t do it because it’s duty. She does it because she loves it. She teaches him. She reads to him. She sings with(to) him. She plays with him endlessly. She wakes up in the middle of the night to feed him and care for him. She rocks him to sleep and is patient with him, even when it takes hours upon hours. She puts his needs well ahead of her own. She is so selfless. She does everything and anything for him. Four months into parenthood, I know she is and will continue to be such a great mother of our children.

I have full confidence that as I go out every day for work, she will hold the fort down at home. She will teach Sam and our future children what they need to be taught…so that they can be good human beings and disciples of Christ.

So just as I have recently discovered a new type of love for Sam, I have felt this new type of love for Rachel. I always wanted to marry someone whose highest priority would be to raise a good family. I found her. She’s super mom.

Bottom line is that i’m lucky to have Rachel. I learn from her everyday. She is a catch. I couldn’t have dreamt up a better wife to have. I look forward to the wonderful experiences and adventures we will share together. Hopefully I can keep up. :)

Rachel, Happy Birthday! I love you.

Updates from Beijing

My wife and son left today. They spent a little over 2 weeks here with me. I already feel a little bit empty without them. I loved coming home from work to hug them and hear how about their daily explorations of Beijing. I loved having them here and I already miss them. I know Rachel was nervous about doing the long flight with Sam. Hopefully it worked out fine.

I won’t see them for 2.5 weeks. I leave China in a week and once in the states I have more traveling. Rachel is going directly to Utah because she has some interior design engagements for a few weeks. So I’m gonna miss them dearly. I love them so much.

Below are a few pics from the Great Wall on Saturday. I tweeted a few of these. All from the iPhone. These two are the joy of my life.

When we first got there, it was really cold. So we kept Sam warm. He looks like ET.

It warmed up quickly so we took the layers off Sam. Here he is just chilling. Someday he’ll brag about how cool this was.

Rachel sitting in a corner in one of the towers…nursing the little guy. Both are such troopers.

Hipstamatic

I downloaded an iPhone app called Hipstamatic and was messing with it. The only thing that I don’t like about it is that it doesn’t save the original image (unadulterated). Instead it automatically saves the image with the hipstamatic effects. Kind of a bummer. But still fun to mess with.

Rachel and Sam below in both pics. We’re currently in San Diego.

When Sam Was Born

I didn’t want this history to get lost in the twitter interwebz so I decided to copy all my tweets relating to my son’s birth and put them here.

Like i’ve said, this blog is for my personal history. My son’s birth was a life-changing experience and I need it documented. Enjoy.

We went to Baker Beach today. It was freezing. Sam was screaming almost the entire time. It was a fun disaster.

What we did on Valentine’s Day

Aside from playing ball early in the morning, watching a chick flick (He’s just not that into you), cooking our own Jamaican Jerk pizza (going to the store in preparation for that), and making out…this is what we did on Valentine’s Day. We did a dance video. This is a dance scene during the ending credits of Slumdog Millionaire.

River Rafting in Costa Rica

We went river rafting on Tuesday in Costa Rica. We went with h2O adventures. Professional. Experienced. Great company.

So I have to admit…this little adventure of ours is probably the most terrifying experience I have ever had.  Terrifying in the sense that I basically thought I was gonna die. I thought my life was gonna end.  I fell into these level 5 rapids a couple times…I’m convinced I felt the early sensations of drowning.  I panicked. I freaked out. Cold cold ice water.  It freezes you up.  The rocks….they bang you up and mug you.  White water splashing everywhere…if you fall in….getting a good breath of air is practically impossible. This was a level V run according to our guides. Not for beginners.  We were all beginners. We wanted something tough.  Little did we know it would be this tough.

Someone at the beach later in the day told us that someone recently died in that same river doing the same thing we were doing. This river run was intense.  It was dangerous.  It was terrifying.

Having survived it all, now a little bruised and a little battered (emotionally and physically) I can now say I have never had such a huge adrenaline rush.  My heart has never raced faster than in those rapids. If you asked me to do it again, i’m not sure i’d say yes. I’d have to really think about that one.  I’m just glad we all made it out alive.  The helpless feeling like a rag doll in those rapids isn’t very pleasant.  Here are a few pics from the adventure.

Yes…it was very intense.  Yes, I would go river rafting again. I’m just not sure i’d do Level 5 rapids.  Maybe 3. The company also does other levels in other parts of the river or in other rivers.  h20 adventures did a great job and we all really enjoyed it (only after knowing we were gonna live another day).

This was by far the most exhilarating experience of the trip and probably of my life up to this point. I was staring at death in the face on multiple occassions.

2 years

Yesterday was our anniversary.  It’s been 2 years now since we’ve been married. Oh how quickly time has gone by.  I would have put this post up yesterday except it was go go go.  We had lunch together at the Dew.  Then later we went to Happy Sumo and had some delicious sushi.  Then we went to The Quarry and did some fun indoor rock climbing (a lot of fun!).  Got some frozen yogurt at Froyo.  Came home and watched a few shows (Eli Stone, Prison Break).  Chilled the rest of the night.

My wife is amazing. I love her so much.  I don’t know how I got so lucky.  Everyday I thank God in my prayers for such a wonderful soul mate.  I am so blessed.  I look forward to an eternity with her.  What a special person she is. I can’t even begin to describe how much I love her…so i’ll stop here.
